Top 5 Herbs that Help Digestion

In my experience as an herbalist and a patient suffering from fibroids and endometriosis, I’ve found that, creating a balanced environment in your gut can allow your hormonal system to work a bit more efficiently and eventually reduce pain and discomfort until your body returns to a balanced state.

Here are the 5 herbs I’ve used through the years to soothe my GI tract and also help balance my hormonal self.

*Chamomile – very popular and mild. Don’t be fooled by the fact that it’s common and wildly used. Chamomile increases gastric juices, helps you expel gas, reduce painful spasms and reduce inflammation. It is wildly used because it is mild so even people with IBS and other serious gastric conditions can use it.

*Hops (will help you sleep, sedative, nerving relaxant), but it revs up your digestive juices.

*Slippery Elm (Ulnus spp) – is used in lots of OTC’s. Slippery Elm is great for the mouth (soft tissue, canker sores, stomach walls). Awesome to sooth the gut when your hormones are causing LOTS of issues

*Yarrow: Yarrow leaf and flower can be added to food or used in tea. This bitter plant may be helpful in managing blood sugar, which is so important in maintaining digestive health AND regulating thyroid function, which is key in maintaining strong and balanced hormonal health.

*Triphala, an Ayurvedic combination of the fruits amalaki, haritaki and bibhitaki, is the classic herbal remedy for long-term digestive benefit. It tones the intestinal walls, detoxifies the system and promotes evacuation. Triphala has a high tannin content, so in low doses, it treats diarrhea (1 gram per day). In higher doses, it treats constipation in a slow, gentle way, toning the walls of the gut while it works.

4 Easy Ways To Heal Your Gut

Did you know that the function of your immune system, the state of your mental health, the pain or lack thereof in your joints, and even whether or not you have seasonal allergies can all be determined by one thing?

Do you know what it is?

The health of your gut!

Conventional and unconventional research is proving it over and over: poor gut health = poor overall health.

If you experience “common” digestive complaints such as occasional gas, bloating, or heartburn, your gut needs some work. Find out here the 4 Easy Ways To Heal Your Gut!

 1. Take a quality probiotic – The delicate balance of good vs. bad bacteria and yeasts in our intestines is easily thrown out of whack, which is why taking a probiotic supplement can help you more easily maintain that balance.
 1. Take the crap out – your body must be eliminating debris regularly, daily, ideally more than once per day. If not, you’re leaving behind poop inside of you. You think poop is disgusting? How about that stinky, nasty poop sitting inside of you day in and day out!? Embrace enemas or colonics if you have been severely constipated or partly constipated for more than a week. Also embrace oils like avocado, coconut, sesame in your foods to make sure things move in your insides a little easier.
 1. Add resistant starches to your diet. Foods that are resistant to the power of the digestion of the small intestine are known as resistant starches. The overall health benefits to consuming resistant starches are many. They are considered Pre-biotics, in other words, they exist to help feed your probiotics (that beneficial bacteria in your gut that’s there to help you fight off diseases. These pre-biotics feed your probiotics. Foods like this include sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, lentils, brown rice, plantains.
 1. Stay away from sugar! Look, the stuff is as addictive as cocaine, messes up with your hormones, can feed cancerous cells, makes you swollen and chubby. Oh, and it makes your colon feel really miserable. It makes you constipated or, if you have IBS of Chrohn’s disease like I do, it can exacerbate your symptoms and give you explosive diarrhea. You’ve been warned!
Restore Gut Health with This ONE ingredient

Have you heard of Reishi mushroom? You may not want to toss your next salad with some reishi mushrooms (yeah, they are really bitter), but when you hear what all this little ‘shroom can do, you may decide to add it to your supplement regiment!

The Reishi mushroom, also known as ganoderma mushroom, has been used in Eastern “medicine” like Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda for many hundreds of years. And now, the Western World is slowly recognizing its healing properties.

But for the purpose of digestion and gut health, how does it help? Check the video below to learn how!
